What is ACLT?

Watch these video featuring ACLT homeowners & tenants sharing their stories about how affordable housing has improved their lives!

The Albany Community Land Trust (ACLT) is a community-based non-profit organization committed to rebuilding neighborhood housing stock and creating high quality permanently affordable housing in the city of Albany.

Owning Land for the Community

ACLT holds land in a trust for the use of community residents who would otherwise be priced out by the community real estate market.  The homeowner holds the title to the renovated building. We provide quality rental and homeownership opportunities.

ACLT is part of the AHP Homeownership Center and a member of the Albany Community Development Alliance.

ACLT Program Highlights 2022

Thanks to the leadership of our engaged board of directors, ACLT has become a successful affordable housing developer and property manager.  ACLT specializes in acquiring and rehabilitating vacant properties for sale to first time homebuyers or to retain as permanently affordable rental housing.

Program highlights from 2022:
  • Completed the substantial rehabilitation of 4 single family rental units, including the first all-electric ACLT home.
  • Worked to rehabilitate two homes for sale to eligible first time buyers.
  • Worked with the Albany County Land Bank and the City of Albany to implement a Mow-to-Own program to help neighborhood residents manage vacant lots on their block.
  • Accessed resources from the Community Loan Fund of the Capital Region, Touhey Homeownership Foundation, B'nai B'rith Foundation, Enterprise Community Partners and NYS Homes and Community Renewal for affordable housing development.

Our Mission:

To develop affordable housing opportunities for low-income people, preserve housing affordability for future generations, combat community deterioration by promoting economic opportunities in low-income neighborhoods, and educate the general public about ongoing and innovative methods of community development.

Breathing Blocks Lot Clean Up

ACLT and the Albany County Land Bank partnered with the Center for Community Progress, Grounded Solutions Network, and Andrew Butcher to explore ways to better partner to address vacant lots and buildings in Albany.   Two exciting pilot projects are in the works, including the Mow-to-Own vacant lot management program.  If you're interested in watching over a lot near you, please  contact us.  In the meantime, please visit the Vacant Lot Tool Kit for ideas!
ACLT homeowners gain equity and financial stability, and Albany gains quality homes that are affordable for generations to come.
